It's Smythe's fault. Jonathan St. John Smythe. Everyone told me, "Timothy, he is the best in the city. If anyone knows a cure for your...disease... then it is he. Please just give him a chance." So I gave the doc a chance. Not that I blame him necessarily... hell, I would have tried anything as an alternative to what was changing in my body. No doctor had an explanation. I felt as though every part of my body was coming apart, as if, every cell, every atom was slowly seperating itself from the whole that was Timothy Adams.

Pinpointing the problem as a rare mutation in which my cellular structure lacked the substance and necessary properties to perform their functions, and surmising that I didn't have long to live, Smythe suggested a state-of-the-art procedure derived from the chemotherapy popular in cancer medication. He had constructed a shoulder harness, belt, visor, chinpiece, and pairs of gloves and boots that would slowly emit doses of uranium into my cells, saturating every last atom with radiation. Healthy radiation, he assured me. It was intended to stay within my cells for only a few weeks, but the end result would prove to be the cure for my unexplained mutation. Unfortunately, the operation was slated on that fateful day in Paragon City, May 23rd, 2002...the first day of the Rikti invasion.

The power surges that flowed throughout the city during the attack affected Smythe's laboratory as well as the gadgets he had me hooked up to. The radiation increased. Smythe couldn't stop it, no one could. I felt the uranium permeate every molecular gap in my body. Every inch of my being was killed in the onslaught of uranium molecules. But then, only seconds after my death, I awoke to see a new world through the thick lenses of Smythe's visor. I felt...different. I had a sense that I had never felt before. I felt as if I could reach out and touch every atom in every living organism I saw.

From that day on, I understood. I am able to affect other beings on the atomic level with doses of the radiation that now coarses through my every vein. Additionally, due to the technological makeup of these gadgets that are grafted to my body, I can affect the atomic structure of other organisms without the radiation, releasing an organisms atoms into the air and reforming them wherever I will. Through perfect control of every atom in my body, I can also transport myself great distances by reducing my molecular weight and moving at high speeds, realigning my atoms whenever I wish. Not to mention I can create pure atomic energy that encases my fists and punch the crap outta stuff. That's a fun one.

Smythe has offered to fix me back the way I was, before the invasion, without my disease of course. But, with the Rikti running rampant, gangs on the loose, and heroes who need a little green in their diet, I believe Timothy Adams can take a break. I think Paragon has a little more use for me as the heroically diseased, wonderfully infected, marvelously metabolised, Doc Atomic!
